Practical part of the examination from Pathology

We are publishing the instructions for the practical part of the examination from Pathology.

Dates

The practical part of examination will take place during the weeks of May 12–16 and May 19–23, always starting at 10:00 AM in the autopsy study rooms for the groups scheduled for autopsy practice during those weeks. This part of the examination will be conducted by designated assistants who are not the regular group assistants of the examined group. Attendance at this practical session is mandatory (approved absences do not apply). If, for any reason, a student does want to not take the practical exam during this period (including participation in Rector’s Day), the practical part will be examined during the final theoretical examination. In that case, the examiner will be Prof. Zámečník, Dr. Balko, or another designated teacher.

Structure

The examination will take place in the form of an oral interview and consists of three parts:

- macroscopic diagnostic part

  • Pathological-anatomical description, analysis, and macroscopic diagnosis of organ changes based on photographically documented macroscopic findings from autopsy and biopsy work.
  • Each student will draw 2 printed photographs of macroscopic findings (A4 format) and will have approximately 5 minutes to prepare.

- microscopic diagnostic part

  • Histopathological analysis and diagnosis of 2 selected microscopic slides.
  • Each student will draw 2 microscopic slides and will have approximately 5 minutes to prepare.

- methodological part

  • Answering one question from the “Diagnostic Pathology Methodology” topic set.
  • Each student will draw 1 question and will have approximately 5 minutes to prepare.

The main goal of the examination is to verify the use of professional terminology when describing organ changes and the basic ability to engage in logical differential diagnostic reasoning. It is strictly prohibited to take away or document any photographs or slides in any manner.

The macroscopic part of the examination is one component of the pathology exam (see Teaching rules). A grade of “4 – fail” in the any part means an overall grade of “4 – fail” for the entire exam. In the event of failure, the student will be re-examined in practical parts of the practical exam during the resit.
